This exhibition features new work by three midwestern artists who draw inspiration from the decorative arts of the past. BA Harrington’s installation blends furniture, needlework, and film to probe the poetics of old dowry chests. Sarah Lindley’s porcelain cabinets are haunting, skeletal re-creations of eighteenth-century furniture. Beth Lipman’s monumental sculpture features some 400 hand-blown glass renderings of historic forms. These works raise important questions about the life cycle of the things in our homes, and about the dreams, fantasies, and memories people project onto material objects.
This exhibition is organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Chipstone Foundation, and curated by Ethan Lasser, curator at the Chipstone Foundation.
