Thursday, March 11 - Film Noir Screening: Double Indemnity

THURSDAY, MARCH 11, 6:15 PM

Double Indemnity, dir. Billy Wilder, 1944
Experience one of the starkest noir films, both visually and ethically. This adaptation by Raymond Chandler and Billy Wilder of the James Cain novella (1935) features crisp storytelling, excellent performances, and first-rate hard-boiled dialogue. The contrast between light and dark throughout is perhaps one of the most consistent statements of noir aesthetics. The story similarly reflects this strict division and projects it onto the moral plane with "right" embodied in the rigorously logical, morally and statistically driven insurance investigator and "wrong" in the sexually and criminally wayward couple.

The Noir Palette: The Visual Codes of Despair
UW-Milwaukee associate professor Vicki Callahan will facilitate a discussion after the film, during which she will look at the close and consistent link in film noir between visual codes and the moral dynamics of the story world.

Being held in conjunction with the Street Seen exhibition.

Lubar Auditorium
Free with Museum admission

Vicki Callahan is Associate Professor at UW-Milwaukee and, this year, a visiting scholar at USC's Institute for Multimedia Literacy, where she is piloting a course for the Brave New Educators initiative (with Robert Greenwald's documentary film group, Brave New Films). She is the author of Zones of Anxiety: Movement, Musidora, and the Crime Serials of Louis Feuillade and editor of the forthcoming Reclaiming the Archive: Feminism and Film History. She co-authors with Lina Srivastava, transmedia-activism.com, a resource site for using cross-media platforms to effect social change.
