· Travel back to when our region was transitioning from frontier territory to settled state, as you explore the furniture, ceramics, textiles, and metalwork in the exhibition The Finest in the Western Country: Wisconsin Decorative Arts 1820-1900.

· Join guest curator Emily Pfotenhauer for her Finest in the Western Country opening lecture and acquaint yourself with the arts of nineteenth-century Wisconsin, 6:15 p.m.

· Visit Robert Rauschenberg's Cardbird II on the Mezzanine Level. It looks like cardboard, but is it?

Antoine’s Alphabet by Jed Perl

Join others in the Bradley Rooms to discuss this delightful investigation of one of the most mysterious painters who ever lived, Antoine Watteau. Perl creates an astonishing experience by gathering his reflections on this “master of silken surfaces and elusive emotions” in the form of an alphabet—a fairy tale for adults—and giving us a new way to think about art. This brilliant collage of a book is a hunt for the treasure of Watteau’s life and vision that encompasses the glamour and intrigue of eighteenth-century Paris. Critic and art historian John Richardson has described Perl’s book as “a labor of love...writer and subject are perfectly matched. Reading Perl’s book is akin to listening to Horowitz playing Chopin—that most Watteau-like of composers. Perl’s dazzling asides and vignettes amount to a wonderfully deep and rounded portrayal of this great master.”
