In her treatment of form, O’Keeffe hovered tantalizingly between representation and abstraction throughout her long career.

Flower paintings such as this became perhaps the best-known of her signature images. Set against the clear blue Southwestern sky, these over-scale poppies seductively reveal their inner beauty and proclaim themselves a generative force of nature.
