Hello bloG&Gosphere

June 8th, 2008

Hello,
I’m Simon Anderson and I look forward to this, my first experience in blogging. I think it highly appropriate that Gilbert & George should ease my entry into the blogosphere as they helped introduce me into the realm of contemporary art. Their early performance ‘The Singing Sculpture’ also known as ‘Underneath the Arches’ formed the backdrop of a television play which I saw when it was aired in the early 1970’s. It was an unique and intriguing action and I have followed their career with close interest ever since. Although I can’t claim to know them personally, I have been to many exhibitions of their work. I was fortunate enough to see their re-embodiment of the ‘Singing Sculpture’ in New York in the 1990’s, and a few years ago I made a public interview with G&G at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and had a very entertaining time. My hopes for this blog are that it provides a forum for thought-provoking debate, and a context for the ever-developing oeuvre of Gilbert & George.

Glad you like the website, baby. Have you seen the exhibit? If so, what do you think?

I have not seen the exhibit yet but have been watching the videos. I wanted to write and ask the meaning of “Shitted” but then I saw the last video and Gilbert and George are saying it doesn’t mean anything. What do you think?

    abbie,
I’ve not seen the video, although I’m not surprised they say it doesn’t mean anything. But in an earlier work, Gilbert was introduced as “the Shit” [Magazine Sculpture, 1969], so they do know the word carries some weight. In ‘Shitted’, the huge turds that float behind them are bigger than they are, and they’re sitting on the floor with their tongues sticking out, which are the same colour as the shit. Perhaps they’re making some connection between what goes in and what comes out?
What did you think it might mean, before you heard what they said?

Don’t they have a wonderful sense of humour!

At first I was disgusted and I thought that perhaps the artwork was a metaphor for the idea that the world “is going to shit”. That all around us these disgusting things are happening but it’s taboo to look at our own excrement.
