The show officially opened last night with a reception and book signing. It was mind blowing to see so many friends, family, former students, artists, musicians, colleagues, professors, curators and fans of photography gracing the beautiful MAM spaces. There were surprises throughout the evening including Julie’s sister Heidi in candy apple red sari with husband Michael who flew in from Washington DC, Pearl in chic black dress who flew in from NYC, Jimmy von Milwaukee in cool baby blue polka dot bow tie, Chuck + Chuck from Madison in elegant black-and-white formal wear, Brad and Amber in matching sapphire blue ensembles plus so many of the people we’ve photographed over the past 20 years. Jimmy von Milwaukee sent us matching chartreuse orchid corsages! We signed a lot of catalogs too. There was a line! A line? It’s true. The catalog is a gem! It was designed by the MAM’s own Dan Saal. It features 4 different covers with eyes peering out at you. It’s a quiet show and we hope people will go back some rainy autumn afternoon and spend time in the dim chambers of the MAM’s inner sanctum Koss Gallery.
Saw the show–EXCELLENT! Was a lot of fun seeing your work juxtaposed against the other work.
Very cool!

I thought your show was wonderful. Tender stuff, that. Jerry and his Mom. The little room with the lights. Mmm. Best, Dick
This was our first MAM opening night event, but it was great fun and very interesting. The space was quite crowded, more so than we had expected, and it was entertaining trying to figure out who in the crowd were the subjects in the photos hanging before us. The title of the show is reminiscent of the title of a bad Bob Dylan movie from several years ago, named Masked and Anonymous. The show is anything but, featuring both recent and older works by Shimon & Lindemann, and famous works by more famous photographers from the MAM’s collection. It is an interesting selection and organized in a way that adds interest to the whole. We have long been fans of J&J’s photos of the seamy side of smalltown WI life, and it is great to see them getting more and more recognition for their awesome work. And not an aluminum tree in the room!
We loved that Dylan movie and the alter ego character Jack Fate…

Hey JandJ,
I was in Milwaukee recently and was so glad to have the opportunity to see your beautiful show! It was exceptional–congratulations to you both. It was great to see the range of your work and the various processes you use to assist you in conveying your ideas. The selection of the images of others interspersed with yours was wonderful as well, and full of surprises that included some of my personal favorites who I don’t get to see “live” often (Gowin, Bellocq, Meatyard, Tress, Von Bruenchenhein, etc.) All around, a very strong and well-conceived show.
All my best to you both,
Russell
